Generic Keyword Strategy
Generic Keywords are broad terms which are searched for online.
Search terms such as: Shoes, Loans, Books, Real Estate, Vacations
can all be considered as generic or broad search terms. Searches
for generic terms most often result in the largest brands or companies
for those particular terms being displayed in search results pages.
Many generic keywords and phrases can be the most difficult to achieve
high ranking search results for. A search for a generic term such
as "books" for instance will produce a listing of the some most
well known online and offline book retailers and distributors. Such
companies are well established and enjoy what is known as authority
status for these particular search terms.
A newly built website cannot realistically expect to compete from
day one with the likes of Amazon, the NY Times and Barnes & Noble
for the generic Keyword "books" Businesses with established offline
and online authority status. However, it is possible to compete
for many generic search terms. I have always maintained that the
internet is an even playing field.
Large companies do not automatically receive top ranking in search
results pages for generic terms just because they exist. They must
be established as an authority site before this can happen and this
is usually the result of large numbers of visitors, back links,
references and content. These are all criteria that any web site
could meet.
While establishing your site as an online authority and ranking
well in search results pages for highly competitive generic keywords
can be a difficult of task, it is not impossible. I know from personal
experience that it can be done. Don't write this strategy off just
because it seems daunting and challenging
