Note: If you don’t know what a Google+ ‘ripple’ is, it’s basically a tool that allows users to visualize how posts are shared. It was released in late 2011 and Google recently announced that they intend to improve it by adding support for more languages as well as link sharing.

Introduction

After learning about the link sharing feature in Google+, we decided that it would be interesting to see how far we can push Ripples. We noticed several usability elements and attempted to connect them to what we previously learned about Ripples from Google.

The first observation that we made is that there is no quick limit as to how many times a user can re-share one post. After only re-sharing our post a few times, we also noticed that we could create a very large number of re-shares; however, this largely depends on the connections of those who re-share and the popularity of the link.

Instead to spamming people’s walls with our shares, though, we thought it would be best to see what Google has to say about this issue. In our test we also managed to crash Chrome, but this could be attributed to other factors like extensions, flash, other windows and available memory.

The Test

We started the test by sharing multiple links. In one instance, we created a post which was shared and then re-shared by two different people. When we tried to visualize these posts, we discovered that it’s best to use left clicking to navigate around, as using the mouse scroll button was too sensitive.

Next, I decided to re-share a post that was re-shared by someone else from my wall. The Google+ Ripple visualized this without any limitations or filtering. Here’s what nested shares look like:

We next brought two more people in to help us – we imagined that this would help us diversify our little experiment and it actually did. We also learned something very interesting as a result. Let’s zoom in a bit to find out what.

Someone who re-shared our post has deleted it at one point, but we were still able to see it in the visualization as well as on the side panel.

If we were to remove nodes from the ripple visualization right now, we would lose edges and/or vertices. This, in turn, would break the hierarchy and cause the ripple to display incorrectly. One work-around for this would be to re-assign share nodes and allocate them a new status of an independent share.

Keep in mind, however, that this may not be the best solution as it sometimes influences the algorithmic management of shares. Some people believe that this plays a role in the rankings of Google+ posts and could even be applied to web search in the future.

We then decided to test continuous self-sharing and see how they impact graph rendering; in order to do this, we selected a random node and re-shared. The following image illustrates the first step of this process:

In the next image you can see a how it looks like when the same author re-shares his own post:

The Verdict

Without a doubt, Google+ Ripple is an interesting tool that gracefully displays public shares. Additionally, it’s probably the only one of its kind at the moment. After numerous tests, we observed that it always rendered our data well – it never looked out of order.

More Observations

Another thing that it’s worth mentioning is that Google+ Ripple does not display private shares. Can a private share, however, be publicly re-shared? Yes – the owner can do it as well as anyone else from his or her circles. We couldn’t figure out if this is a bug or not at this moment.

One feature that Google+ Ripple is certainly missing is a system that allows users to jump to specific spots in the ripples. Single path mapping with animated playback would also be nice thing to have. Another feature that we hope to see soon is more detailed statistics.

Lastly, we would also love the ability to select shares by date. This feature would help avoid a skewed animated playback when several people share the same post on the same date.

Twenty-two business event industry representatives from Australia will visit six cities across Asia on a two week mission (12 May to 25 May) to showcase Australiaâ??s capabilities and facilities in hosting world-class business events and as a preferred conference and incentive destination.

Tourism Australiaâ??s international business events marketing arm, Business Events Australia, will lead the Australia delegation, presenting to 400 key corporate buyers and business events agents and encouraging them to choose Australia for their next business event.

Participating Australian delegates include convention bureaux, state tourism organisations, hotels, convention centres and attractions.

â??This road show enables the Australian industry to meet with the Asian business events agents and corporate buyers, giving them the opportunity to present the destination, products and experiences they represent and also allows them to establish direct relationships and business opportunities,â? said Ms Penny Lion, Head of Business Events Australia.

Corporate buyers will have the opportunity to experience a taste of Australia, as the delegation will present their expertise and creativity through a gala event in each city.

Ms Lion reinforced that Asia is one of Australiaâ??s most important and fastest growing markets for business events and that growth is expected to continue across the region, including from China, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

Around 8,000 delegates from Amway China visited Australia in early 2011 and Australia is looking forward to hosting another 4,400 delegates from Amway India in Melbourne in 2012. Melbourne also recently played host to 500 delegates from Asia-Pacific who attended the Intel Solutions Summit 2011, 300 delegates from Indonesia Stock Exchange, and 500 delegates from Prudential Malaysia. Gold Coast was also host to 60 delegates from Canon and Perth was the destination choice for 65 delegates from United Engineers from Singapore last year.

In addition, two leading Taiwanese insurance companies have also confirmed groups of 500 delegates and 700 delegates for Australia later this year.

â??This is a great opportunity for our Australian industry to interact directly with their customers and better understand the culturally diverse Asian region, so they can provide customised solutions to meet the different market needs and establish strong partnerships for their businesses,â? said Mr Johnny Nee, Regional General Manager, North Asia.

â??Our 22 participating business events industry delegates will be presenting 66 itineraries tailored for three different group sizes of 100, 300 to 500, and above 800 delegates to provide our corporate customers and agents a wide range of itineraries to work with – and also a glimpse of what they can experience at their business events in Australia,â? added Mr Nee.

Asia is a strategic growth area for the Australian 2020 Tourism Industry Potential. The Australian tourism industry aims to double overnight visitor expenditure to as much as $140 billion by 2020. Business events visitors to Australia will make an important contribution to this objective, as the Australian business events sector is already worth nearly $8 billion in overnight visitor expenditure. For the year ending December 2010, Australia had a 56% increase in business event arrivals from India, 45% from Singapore, and 26% from China. Indonesia now attracts around 3,600 business event visitors and Malaysia 3,300 and Taiwan 5,300 which represent potential for further growth in 2011 and 2012.

SEM is about several online strategies that promote WebPages. By marketing with the arts of paid placement, contextual ads, and paid inclusion; SEM is used to gain relevance on the search engines. The ranking of a website increases in visibility on the search engine result pages. Something most marketers do is to hire a third part professional to pull keywords and implement marketing strategy. The formula that is best for your SEM needs is so different from anything else in website design normally, but those who are experienced in it are eagerly sought after. The biggest issue currently hanging over the heads of most users creating and promoting content online today is plagiarism. SEM is actually more art than science. It is the combination of forces generated through public relations and the power of advertising. Duplicate content, redirects of WebPages, and regular updating are things to avoid if wring for an SEM company.
